If the people knew, if they truly knew what was happening beneath the surface of that stony plateau, the whole operation risked being shut down. James couldn’t have that; his work was too important. Saving Jilly was too important, and this last one, the last specimen he brought in was going to be absolutely perfect. He peered through the cage while the old man glared back at him. He refused to submit, even now despite his clear defeat, the man refused to submit. James leaned towards the rusted cage and let candle light illuminate his features. He wanted the man to see how truly grateful he was. “I just need your heart,” James whispered. “If you saw who it was for, you’d know she deserves it more than you do.”
